Ion. χείλιοι, Eol. χέλλιοι (χελληστυς “Tausendschaft”), Att. χί̄λιοι (*χέσλιοι). Das Grundwort *χεσλο- findet sich in sakisch ysüra and in Lehnwörtern finnisch-ugrischer Sprachen (Jacobsohn Arier and Ugrofinnen 105 ff.). Perhaps also Lat. mīlle “tausend; ein Tausend”, whether from *smī ĝzhlī (ĝhslī) “eine Tausendbeit”; *smī : Gk. μία.
